Since World War II, the U.S. and the world have conducted a massive uncontrolled experiment, introducing tens of thousands of chemicals to the marketplace and the environment without adequate understanding of their impacts. The results – from the near-loss of the bald eagle as a result of PCB contamination to the recent spread of highly toxic “forever chemicals” across the world – have been devastating. Treating new toxic substances as “innocent until proven deadly” hasn’t worked; earlier and better testing of chemicals, improved disclosure, and a shift to non-toxic alternatives can.
